Keepings Ants Away from Your Home

August 26, 2015

colony-of-antsFrom bee removal to termite control near Long Island, there are a number of ways in which your local pest control service can help you efficiently and permanently deal with your unwanted visitors. However, there are also a few steps you can take to keep pests away from your home in the first place. It is important to restrict access to your home and make your home less attractive to outside pests. Here is a look at some of the methods you can use to keep ants away from your home.

Preventing Access

You can significantly reduce the chances of experiencing an ant infestation by making it difficult for them to enter your home. There are a number of ways that you can do this. It helps to start by taking a walk around the outside of your house and looking for any cracks, crevices, or holes that might be allowing pests inside. Seal these entryways with caulk or other sealants to keep ants out. Repair any broken window screens and doors to further limit their access. It is also a good idea to store your firewood far away from your home rather than up against a wall of your house.

Removing Incentives

Another effective method of keeping ants out of your home is removing the incentives that attract them. Ants are drawn to open food, moisture, and shelter and will gladly live in your cabinets, refrigerator, or even bags of food. Refrain from leaving food scraps around your kitchen, and clean up spilled liquids as soon as the spill occurs. Use a closed container for a garbage can and be sure to take your trash bags outside on a daily basis. Removing these incentives will prevent ants from bothering with your home.

Seeking Pest Control Services

If you have repeatedly suffered from ant infestations, it is probably time to call a qualified pest control company to permanently deal with your issue. It is important to start by preventing access and removing incentives, but your pest control professional can use various baits, sprays, and treatments that will destroy ant colonies and keep them from your home.
