Are Mosquitoes Attracted to Light?

Mosquitoes actually prefer lower levels of light most of the time. They tend to shadier areas during the day, and are most active at dusk and dawn when sunlight is low. Mosquitoes navigate by using natural light from the moon and stars. Artificial lights, then, can be a natural deterrent to mosquitoes by disorienting them.

Can Ultraviolet or LED Lights Repel Mosquitoes?

Many insect traps use a light source to draw in insects. However, this works on other insects, not mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not attracted to ultraviolet or LED light. LEDs in particular put off less warmth than other bulbs, making them even less attractive to mosquitoes.

Are mosquitoes attracted to color?

A proven way to make yourself less attractive to mosquitoes is to wear lighter colored clothing. Sound odd? Darker clothes make it easier for insects to find you. That’s because darker clothing traps heat in your body, resulting in more output of your natural scent.

White, khaki, or light colored clothing keeps you cool by reflecting sunlight and is the preferred choice if you’re trying to avoid mosquitos.

Can you use light to repel mosquitoes?

Light neither deters nor attracts mosquitoes, making it an ineffective tool for mosquito control in your yard. Light traps can be effective for pest control when you’re dealing with other insects, just not mosquitoes.

If you’re having trouble deciding how to approach a mosquito problem in your yard, a professional mosquito exterminator is your best option. The experienced experts at Arrow Exterminating can do a quick inspection, and answer any questions you have. Give us a call today to make an appointment!
