What is the Most Effective Mosquito Repellent on Long Island?
There’s repellent for your skin, repellent for your clothing, airborne repellent, and more. How is the average person supposed to know which is the right choice for them?
First, you’ll want to decide which active ingredient you’d rather use in your repellant. Most types contain either DEET or picaridin. In terms of pure effectiveness, EPA-approved repellents containing DEET are found to be more effective at keeping mosquitoes away. However, picaridin is newer and considered to be less harsh.

Picaridin and DEET are the chemicals found in most mosquito repellent products. Which one is better? Both picaridin and DEET have pros and cons:
- Picaridin is effective against many types of insects, emits minimal odor and has no effect on plastics. It has similar protection against most insects as DEET, but is most effective against flies
- DEET has been under heavy scrutiny in the past, but is EPA approved and studies have proven that it poses no health risks. DEET can provide strong protection against mosquitoes for up to 12 hours. DEET can damage plastic and synthetic fibers
